960 wagon drive shaft 900

pulled out the drive shaft ... notice that spline of rear shaft going into front shaft. has a set screw .. into it. what is the reasonging behind this? doing a bearing and hanger replacement ..waiting for dust covers and bearing puller .to finish.. notice that splines seem to have a plastice coating of some sort?
