Well I survived changing the rear light bulbs on my 940 wagon - but I paid the price in pain and carved up knuckles. Of course I thought this would be a breeze - since even putting in new headlight assemblies is simple as pie. But with the rear bulb switch, the access is difficult and it's hard to get one's hands into the opening without a measure of pain (at least for me).
In the event anyone is trying to do this apparently simple task, beware of the subtleties of the light housing plug design. Before I learned the exact differences I suffered greatly since my hand barely fits into that sharp edged opening and in all the twisting with extended fingers there was much frustration.
The trick first of all when you take the old round plastic housing out by unscrewing it, first make a mental photograph of any distinctive features, so you can hopefully replicate the right position. On further study I discovered there are three plastic prongs that go into the light housing, and one of them is larger than the other two. With a flashlight you can find where this slightly wider slot of the 3 prongs is... and guide the round plastic unit in that slot, if possible. It's impossible to actually see the thing once your hand is in there, so it's all done by feel - push down and wiggle until it finally feels like it's traveled in and then rotate clockwise to turn it while wiggling slightly to sink it in.
Whew! Anyhow that's what I learned after about an hour of taking it in and out 12 times - with bruised knuckles every time. Ouch!
