I start by apologizing. I realize I probably should not post this way, but I will make amends and New Years resolutions not to repeat this transgression. For now I'd like to try it this way.
1994 Volvo Tubo Wagon with rear seat.
I know to do this the right way I should go through the FAQs first, but I am trying to short cut to solutions for a group of common and routine problems. I am contemplating selling the car because of these relatively small annoyances. But it runs well and I am considering keeping it as a back up vehicle. I’ve advertised for $1,750 and had some comments that the price was too high. At that price it costs me nothing to hold onto it and I can always donate it as an option. I just don’t want to be seduced into big work, so I’m trying to solicit help through this posting.
SRS light on. This came on after a repair shop replaced the crank sensor a couple months ago. I wonder if they disturbed a wire or something in that area? I haven’t bothered following the repair procedure set out in the FAQs, but I did read it. I’d welcome any hints.
Gas gauge. intermittently working and then not working. I don’t know where to look, but presumably it is just a loose connection.
Speedometer. Same as gas gauge, but not related. Often works just fine. Sometimes doesn’t. Just dead at the bottom of the scale. Again, must be a loose electrical connection or maybe a mechanical connection, but don’t know where to look.
Heater temperature. Temperature gauge registers correctly. Fan works fine. The air coming through is usually warm, but once in a while, like driving tonight in 30 degree weather, it just comes through cold and that can continue for a while. Then it might return to hot for no particular reason. I twist the thermostat control back and forth, but that doesn’t seem to do anything. Could it be as simple as a faulty thermostat? Its been years, but I think I replaced one once and it wasn't expensive or difficult. I don't think it was this 940. Is it up near the top of the engine? I checked the coolant reservoir and it showed a decent level of coolant, although I am loosing some (another issue entirely having to do with a leaking head gasket that I’ve been nursing along for years with pepper). However, after I opened the coolant cap and drove home, about 5 miles, the temp remained constantly warm. I don’t know enough to connect the release of pressure in the coolant reservoir with what seemed to be an improvement or whether there is just a coincidence.
Transmission: I had this same experience on other 940s I’ve owned. Transmission shifts but only because I ease off the gas pedal at the shifting points. Otherwise it would hold in gear for a very long time while accelerating. I think I did a transmission flush on another one of my 940s last year. I don’t recall whether it helped. But is that the first thing I should consider doing. Funny, I haven’t thought of checking the transmission level, but that’s probably the first think I should do. It also seems to shift better when cold, but I may just be imagining that.
Turbo. Because of how the manifold pressure operates to assist on the opening and closing of heating vents, whenever I accelerate the blower for the heater seems to stop. I know that this is just a vent closing because of something in the turbo system. The fan is still operating, but the hot air can’t come through the vent. I am not about to get into a big job over this and I recall it is a big job. As long as I can get the air hot, it is adequate for me even on an intermittent basis. So my issue regarding hot / cold air mentioned above needs to get resolved. The intermittent flow is not so much of a problem for me but the temp of the air is. Its finally become winter in Boston.
Things like radio, wipers, all lights and lenses, body, seats etc. look good. Except for what I’ve mentioned all the little appliances are fine. I’ve done a lot of replacing over the years. Engine starts all the time and I can’t put my finger on anything that is major, but small annoyances tend to wear one down and then you just say enough. I am trying to thread the eye of the do it yourself needle without getting myself in too deep. I’ve done that many times and I am trying to reform. I had four 940s as recently as last June and I’ve whittled down to one.
Thanks for any help or comments you send my way.
