I just discovered a substantial leak in my catalytic converter. It is where the pipe exits the body of the converter heading toward the muffler. It does not appear to be a good area to patch because that part of the assembly is not well supported and the vibration that probably caused the crack will likely do the same for any repair.
I guess I could get some kind of steel epoxy and goop it up thoroughly. That might be work temporarily but I would not have any confidence in it. I can see a lot of exhaust exiting right under the passenger cabin, so I think this is a potentially dangerous problem.
Instead, my idea is to cut out the converter altogether (my jurisdiction does not require any environmental compliance on a car this old and the converter is undoubtedly of little effect at this point) and splice in a new piece of straight pipe.
What do you think?
I only average about 1000 miles per year with this car. Its back up for my XC70. I don't want to spend a lot of money on it. Also, in its present condition I would not be comfortable selling it without full disclosure. That would mean a give away or donate. Right now, as back up, its worth something to me for an emergency.
