Radio swap to SC-816 S90-V90 1997

Anyone have positive experience swapping a black SC-811 for a gray SC-816 unit in an S90? All the plugs fit and things work as expected except for the CD changer mounted in the trunk. But, do I still need an adapter of some sort? The replacement has a working radio code: antenna, radio, CD slot, and tape deck all work.

The replacement SC-816 displays "EEEE" when I press the CGHR button, with a loaded cartridge of CDs (Alpine CHM-S620 that came with the car). I tried spraying contact cleaner on both connections, plug and socket, and still no change before/after.

I mentioned it was "gray" since the replacement unit likely did not come from a 960/90, but probably from a donor S/V70, in case that means anything significant. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised the gray faceplate of the head unit actually works fine with my car's dash from an aesthetic standpoint. (Volvo should have made both the radio and HVAC faceplates gray.)

The original changer works with the original SC-811, although sometimes I must completely shutoff the ignition and remove/reinsert the cartridge for it work. WIth the replacement SC-816, it NEVER works.

[BTW: The ASC on the replacement also does not work; but I did not expect it to since the original SC-811 does not have it. I am guessing the ASC feature requires an additional input cable that only the donor car had, which my S90 lacks.]
