Overheating resolved on ist own 200 1989

A curious thing just happened...
I noticed that the temp gauge was starting to move to the 3/4 range.
So, I decided to change the thermostat.
Then, when I started driving, the temp was going back and forth,
until after about 10 miles, it got up to the red zone!
I drove it like that for another 2 miles and then stopped driving.
Within a couple of minutes the temp suddenly dropped back to normal.
I let the engine cool down and then drove it and happily noticed
the temp gauge stayed at normal. So far so good.
Is it possible that some air may have finally bled out???
