240 strut rattling: Do I have to take out the entire assembly out to add washers to the top? 200 1988

Hi all, I recently bought a KYB strut kit from rock auto (gland nuts, bearings, bump stop, dust boots, and strut inserts). I installed everything according to the directions, but no matter how hard I tightened the top strut nut, I still get a clicking noise over bumps.

I searched the Internet and ran across this idea: http://volvostuff.blogspot.com/2011/10/new-struts-and-mounts-rattling-on-volvo.html

While I like the idea, I was wondering if you have to take the entire strut assembly out of the car to add on washers between the strut nut and bearing to keep it from rattling...

Or, can you simply jack the car up, compress the springs on the car, remove the top strut nut, drop the two 16mm washers into place, and re-tighten the nut with the special tool?

With the latter idea, will I have to worry about the nut flying off and causing injury?

I'm presuming with the coil springs compressed, the tension will be gone.

I am I correct in thinking this way?

Thanks a gazillion for your help and ideas in advance!
