Looks like I have a similar problem to that described by another poster today.

I had a shop install new front struts and rear shocks on my '83 240. I bought the parts through FCP Euro and took them into the shop, along with a rear end bushing kit. The struts/shocks are Bilstein HDs. The struts seem fine (although both dust caps are now missing), but I have a problem with the shocks. The ride in the back is very harsh - almost jarring. Yesterday I had my tool box back behind the back seat (the car is wagon). The box was open. I drove down a road that has more than its fair share of potholes. By the time I got home there were tools strewn through the cargo area. A couple times I thought that I felt/heard something slam against the underside of the car while driving down the road with the monster potholes.

Is it possible that the shocks were not installed correctly? Could they be installed backwards/upside down? This wasn't a Volvo shop, but I figured that the suspension setup on our cars is so basic/common that it would be a no brainer to put the parts on and the shop came highly recommended by people I trust.
