Does anyone have tips for passing California smog that they would like to share? It seems like the State targets our cars for the STAR stations and I've had trouble passing the last couple of times (but always passed on the free re-test with some fiddling).
I am thinking about doing the following. Car is an '83 242 with 400,000 miles, B23F, M46.
-New plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor.
-New air filter.
-New oil filter and fresh oil.
-Clean throttle body.
-Clean flame trap.
-Adjust base idle (although it seems fine).
-Run 91 octane in the days leading up to the test (about 20 miles/day of driving).
Questions: Oxygen sensors are relatively inexpensive. The one in the car is only 2 years and maybe 15,000 miles old. For $50, I can replace it with a new Bosch sensor. Worth while?
Also, I think that the air mass meter on this year 240 is adjustable, but I am not sure how to adjust or what measurements to look at. Better to leave it alone if the car is running okay or would fine tuning it help me pass?
Finally, is there anything to the Italian tune-up that I read about on here? You know, driving down the freeway at 70 in 3rd gear for 15 minutes to heat up the cat converter. Seems like a waste of fuel to me but if it helps....
