I have had the idea that many problems that happen electrically can make something else misbehave. These cars are are co-dependent in their being!
'90 Volvo 740 GLE w 148k. Excellent shape, but still a 26 year old car.
Speedometer starts going haywire. I pull the cluster, use dielectric lube on all the connections, and initially it seems to be fixed. Then short time later the ABS light comes on, and the speedo starts jumping again. I asked in another thread if there might be a connection between the two somehow.
No answer, or maybe someone knew ...but missed it.
Anyway ...finally went to check the connection at the rear end. (should have done that first). BOTH WIRES ARE BARE ...INSULATION GONE. I get it all taped and connected back up ..and viola, speedometer back.
And the ABS light is off. Wow! Two for one!
When I would start the car before, the ABS would be off. At the first stop, the brakes would make a weird noise, I would feel the pedal drop a bit, and the light would come on.
Lesson. Check the little things first and don't discount the integrated electrical on these cars!
