Power steering fail 940 900 1993

So I'm driving home ( 1993 940 wagon Non-turb) and I hear a pop (groan also emanating from within myself),and hear what sounds like a wire dangling while I drive. I also notice steering has become noticeably difficult...
upon arrival home I look at the underside and notice a small belt shredded, hanging off the AC/power steering motor (I think that's what it is). So genius me, head off to Pep Boys, get replacement belt, proceed to replace belt in similar position (center V-groove of motor, mated with center groove of crankshaft pulley.
Assuming I must be a mechanical genius and have solved the problem, I pull out of my driveway, only to discover the problem has not changed one bit, and is just as bad as when said belt broke. The steering fluid well is full, so I am out of 'genius' as to what to do.
Can anyone out here advise me on the situation?

Thanks in advance
