Beloved wagon Developed a vibration in the rear view mirror and shifter driving at 65 on the highway pulled over and and looked under the car smoke and oil everywhere rear seal on the trans took a crap. But why? What caused the vibration?

Replaced the seal checked the drive shaft all is good took it for a drive hit 5th gear and smoke and vibration... I've done a bunch of searching for help not much out there. Pulling the trans today and going to open it up...and idea's? I'd like to source parts soon living in northern wisconsin not very many 240s left not very lucky finding them in junk yards...
