Troubleshooting Assistance lifter / exhaust mainfold noise. 700 1991

I have a 1991 740 with a B230FT engine with 185K miles. There is a ticking noise that is quiet when idling but gets loud when accelerating. It does not sound like piston slap because it only appears to happen with a single lifter or cylinder firing. The sound does not go away when the engine warms up. Am starting with an oil change and maybe an additive to address lifers if that is the issue. Please kick me the correct direction.
