fuel pump relay/fuel pump 200 1983

I have a vehicle that runs great for weeks or months on end, then it will die and not start again for a few hours. I suspect it to be the fuel pump relay, or the fuel pump. If I take the car in to my mechanic while it is running well, will he be able to make the right diagnosis. Do you have any hints on the nature of this problem?
