what oil filter for my 544 1966 444-544

having difficulty with my oil filter replacement.....bought one at NAPA, but it would not screw on....the "replacement" was 3/4" x 16 I think, I purchased a "die" for that size, but it did not want to go onto my oil filter outlet, and I did not force it, just replaced the one that was on it, which is not original. what oil filter should I get? the engine's oil light stays on for some seconds before going out and I read that this is possibly caused by the dirtyword wrong/incorrect filter without a valve ??
