Fuel tank sender repair 140-160

Has anybody had success re-wrappng the copper resistance wiring on the VDO fuel sender?
It looks tightly packed together at one end, and then, the successive wraps widen between themselves toward the other end.

What techniques work for doing the actual wrapping (using "magnet wire" from an old computer's cooling fan), and for getting the concentration of wiring correct for proper resstance over the sweep arm?
