1991 240 starter solenoid stuck on. 200

Went to start my 1991 240 and he starter got stuck spinning. The starter did not engage the engine. Thinking it was stuck, I attempted to tap it with a metal bar to disengage, but I could not and I opted to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. If I connect the battery the spinning sound returns. A few weeks ago this happened once and the spinning sound stopped as soon as I exited the car. But this time it continued to spin and only stopped when battery was disconnected.
Any advice is appreciated.
