What's this thing on my power steering hose 200

I had to replace the high pressure power steering hose on my '90 240 yesterday as it had started leaking ever so slightly. I guess after 29 years of service it was overdue. When I removed my old hose I found it had what looks to be a metal weight clamped to the hose. The weight is like a cylinder split down the middle and clamped to the line. Does anyone know what the purpose of this metal piece serves? I didn't install it on the new hose but was wondering if I should.
