Engine change 700 1991

Wondering if anyone can help me I removed a 1991 b230ft engine and replaced it with a 1988 b230f engine now car starts if I keep the throttle down it will run but I hear. A popping noise and car will not idle I used all senors and distributor from the 1991 car any reason this shouldn’t work
