in-tank pump wiring connections in truck ... black box? 200 1988

The fuel gauge sender wire goes into a black plastic box instead of a wire connector.

It appears to have hinges on one side but no "catch" on the opposite side and no space to slide in a screw driver.

Before I break it, ... what is it ... and how is it supposed to be opened?
