J-Type M41 Speedo Pinion gear drive housing identification 1800

Fellow Brickboarders:

I need your advice. I recently bought a rebuilt J-type M41 tranny. When I was getting the parts together to complete the swap with the M40 I have on my 122s (I am posting this under 1800 since I am assuming that was where the late-type M41 may have come from), I was stumped when I saw the speedo drive. I took it out for better view. See pictures:

As you can see, the housing that holds the pinion gear has flat surface...no threads for the speedometer cable to be screwed on.

I showed that picture to the person who sold me the M41. He thought it was odd. While he is figuring that out, I thought perhaps one of you from the Brickboard would have an answer.

Many thanks in advance for your help/advice!

-DS
