alternator dead 900 1996

1996 960 alternator replaced and 50 miles later all dash lights come on and alternator dead. This has happened 2x. What should I look for? Battery is good
and after replaced, the alternator was charging.
Starter sometimes cuts out while trying to start and after releasing the key, the starter sometimes engages just for a second like it would if you turned the key and immediately released it. Could the starter have a short causing the alternator to short out??

Any help appreciated.
