Question for those familiar with Corteco Seals 200

1991 Volvo 240 front camshaft seal, Corteco, has a portion of the front rubber area machined to a small depth for about 1/3 of the circumference, as if to remove old labeling. Both new Corteco seals have this, and I've found images online of Corteco seals like this. Can anyone tell me what its purpose is? Does the seal have a top and bottom, and is this an indicator? Or was this done to remove old branding? Thank you.
