1995 940 Fuel Pump 900 1995

Hello . Have a 1995 940 turbo 147,000 miles . Bought last year . Has been running fine until Today . Turned over but did not start . Undid & checked fuel to fuel rail . Nothing . So problem is no fuel. Replaced FPR(fuel pressure relay ). Still no good . After a number of attempts it started . In tank pump whirring/working fine . This year/model only has one fuel pump . If my main/in tank pump was/is bad then why when I did get it to run did it work fine ?? When they go bad are they intermittant good/bad ?? Guess I should replace unit ?? BTW : Pep Boys thinking it had an inline under seat next to fuel filter pump sold me one(Spectra brand). Can I use it intank ? Or is intank unit different unit ? In which case will return & get correct unit. Thanks very much for help/replies .
