Some EZ Projects 1800 1970

Here'er two projects you can do while you wait for the country to open up again:

WiteOut is the greatest stuff. Once you dab it on something, it lasts almost forever. It’s great to index things you’re disassembling so you know how to orient them on reassembly, or to restore lines and arrows on knobs, etc. In this case, I‘ve used it twice since 2001 to restore my gear shifter knob to like new condition. I guess I did it first when I got the car in 2001. Just recently, I did it again as the white had begun to yellow.

Pretty simple. Just dab the WiteOut into the indentions for the lines and figures and let it dry. Then take some 600 grit wet/dry paper, wet it and use the palm of you hand to contour it to the knob. Sand until all the excess is removed. The numbers and lines will emerge bright, white and distinct. And, after a few miles, the shine will return to the knob as it is polished and oiled by your hand.

You may have noticed my recent posts asking for advice as I completely rebuilt my front suspension. After doing so, I’d hoped that the very hard parking lot steering I’d always experienced would have been improved. It really wasn’t, at least measurably. I also noticed some excessive play in the wheel and thought I might have to adjust the steering box. So, while reaching in the window and jiggling the wheel back and forth I eyeballed the steering box. To my alarm it seemed the pitman arm was flexing. I had thoughts of horror in dismounting the box and replacing a bushing and was ready to pull out the green book to see what I was in for. But first I called my wife and got up under the front end while she jiggled. It turned out the whole steering box was moving slightly. A quick tightening of the three bolts holding it to the frame and the play in the wheel was gone. Also seems to have solved that annoying parking lot steering problem. Guess I never noticed this because of the slop in the rest of the front end. Relief!
