Hi everyone, I have a 1987 Volvo 240 DL wagon with an AW70 transmission that my buddy and I decided to fix up on weekends. I had an intermittent noise when switching into any gear which would result in a rapid, grinding noise followed by a continuous and loud clanging. We removed the transmission and found that the original driveplate had several chipped teeth.
Fast forward several weeks and many bolts later and I can’t seem to make the assembly fit together neatly. When we bolted the driveplate on (using a star tightening formation to avoid stresses) we found there was a gap of several centimeters between the driveplate and the engine on one side while the other side of the driveplate was practically rubbing up against the engine. When I rotated the driveplate, the gap would switch sides.
To me this seems like the driveplate is warped, but this is the second new one I’ve bought and it seems like too much of a coincidence to encounter two warped driveplates. Is there something I’m missing here? Could it be an issue with the inner baseplate, guide sleeve, driveplate bolts, etc.? Any advice is greatly appreciated, I miss driving my brick. Thanks!
