Spent a little time diagnosing the parent’s ’94 960 over the weekend. Thanks to the FAQ (and OBD1) we were able to quickly diagnose the surging idle and hot start issue as the coolant temperature sensor at the back of the head. FAQ was also helpful in finding the right replacement part number. Thanks for that.
Unresolved is temperature gauge. It’s stone dead. The sensor has been replaced at some time over the last 20+ years of ownership and the electrical connection underhood looks good. Each one of these I’ve seen fails open, pegs the gauge at hot. So I’m tempted to blame something at the gauge cluster. Does this make sense? What to look for?
The other gauges all work, though I did notice that the coolant level indicator light does not illuminate at all (after noticing it was low on coolant). Also wiring at the level sensor is corroded, insulation crumbling.
Thoughts on causes/fixes of the temp gauge are welcomed and appreciated. And of course any tips for the ECT sensor replacement.
Thanks,
Will
