m-46 OD wiring 700 1985

I am swapping my auto for an m46 od in my 85 765 wagon.I have been told that i can get a different relay and just use the exsisting wiring, not using the 4th gear switch. would this make it an 8 speed? and if not what damage would it do if od was accedentaly engaged in anything but fourth. ANY help would be appreciated. also if anyone has done this conversion, how did they wire the od solonoid.
