Okay, here's one that has stumped all of the volvo people I know, perhaps you guys could take a crack at it. My '84 240DL is making an inexplicable and inconsistent "whistling" noise. It doesn't happen all the time. Yesterday it happened all day long, when I drove it this evening it didn't happen at all. The whistling noise starts low and then gets louder and higher as I accelerate. People on the stree can heart it! Dogs and small furry animals turn their heads and stare as I drive by whistling away. The sound gets lower as I deaccelerate. The sound is not there when revving the engine in a parked position, only when I am moving. It usually occurs around 20mph+. At first I thought I had developed supersonic hearing and could hear the deer whistles I put on the hood to avoid hitting unsuspecting animals. I lived with that miracle explanation for a week before removing the whistles to test my theory. The car still whistles. It is not a squeel, or squeek, it is a definite whistle. I checked under the hood, in the grill, around the windshield and found nothing that could create this noise. Does anybody have an idea what it could be? It's starting to freak me out! I hope it's nothing serious. I'm starting to fear that the engine pistons are under some bizarre stress and are just ready to pop out through the hood, through the windshield where I will then be decapitated! I'm coming to you guys first before I take it in for costly exploratory surgery.
Thanks in advance!
Kelly
