My 760 Turbo has developed a loud rattle and driveline bounce in the driveline area. I can also feel it in the emergency brake handle. It feels like the drive shaft is bouncing around.
My first instinct was to replace the u-joints.
However, the symptoms don't reflect my experience with u-joint problems. With bad u-joints, there is vibration on take-off or under load conditions, right? Not the case here. No noise is present until I let off the accelerator slightly. While coasting or under acceleration, the rattle disappears. And, this is a rattle and bouncing thud, not vibration, if you get what I mean.
Okay, so I didn't replace the u-joints, but instead replaced the driveline support bearing and mount.
No difference!
(no surprise, as I didn't see any damage in the old parts after replacement)
I was about ready to order some u-joints. But, something tells me I am barking up the wrong tree, still.
These other symptoms don't jive with u-joints:
On my way to work, I drive over this bump on the bridge. The rattle is especially loud going up the hill. But, when I hit that bump, it quietens. Ummm....
When I brake, the driveline bounces terribly. I try to be gentle so as not to attract undue attention. ;-)
My last guess is the transmission mount. What do you think?
How can I check it?
I've already tried moving/inspecting the transmission mount and the engine mounts. But, nothing *looks* obviously wrong. Is it hard to see/test?
Anyone else with this kind of experience?
Yea, my blue turbo with 260k miles need a hand. :)
With many thanks in advance.
