on and off oil leak 200 b230

I have an on and off oil leak that appears to come from behind the timing cover in the area of the camshaft. it leaks alot for a week and then dry for 2 months.this is on both an 87 and a 91.I suspect it could be from a pipe plug that is in the end of the head.Any other ideas?
