hello all,
I've got a 81 242 DL with the b21f "MPG" engine and M46 OD transmission.. the car has approx 191k miles on it. I purchased this car about 3 months ago and since day one has displayed a rather odd little quirk involving a high pitched whine, most audiably heard between 45-65 mph... here is how i describe the noise:
i like to compare the noise to a boeing 747 jet as it (the jet) takes off.. it has a "high-speed-turbine" kind of sound to it... The odd part is that the noise happens regardless of Engine RPM or gear selection (even does it in neutral), as long as its between about 45-65mph.. the noise does escalate in pitch as the car gets faster. it *seems* to be coming near the tranny area of the car (i can put my ear to the gearshift area of the interior and i think i can hear it emanating from that area).. if you roll down the windows while driving, you can hear the sound reflected off nearby objects, so it is fairly loud...
Any clue as to what this might be associated with?? i havent changed any of the tranny or differential fliuds yet (but something like this would *certainly* prompt me into getting that done).. who knows.. it might have never have been changed be4 i bought it (?)would low or dirty fluid cause this? i havent had a trace of problems with shifting or anything else tranny-related...
any info would be more than welcome..... any ideas???
thanks all!!,
Miles
