what is this fitting? - right side of engine, near bell housing... 200 1986

'86 240 DL - what is this brass fitting? - right side of engine, towards the rear - near bell housing about 1/2 vertically down the side of the engine block. It is approx. 3/8" diameter barbed fitting - looks like it should have a hose attached.
