Clunking underneath drivers side 300 1988

I have a clunking noise (actually 6 in a row) after the car starts accelerating. The car is a 760 gle - 1988 with a v6 and independent rear with nivomat shocks. Anybody have any ideas? I would appreciate any and all ideas. And it is not the exhaust pipe.
