Heater fan/defroster 200 1986

I just bought my first brick and am wondering a couple of things. The heater fan in the car is making tons of noise...speeds 1 & 2 are quiet for a couple seconds and then start squeaking so loudly I have to kill it. At any rate, I know these go bad often in 240s, and would like any information on replacing the unit - I've heard it's not fun.

In related news, the defroster vents put out no air at all. The heater fan squeaks, but the lower vents all seem to work...I can't understand why the defroster doesn't put out. What else am I going to need to fix when I replace the heater blower? Defroster switch? Mechanical routing junk up inside the dash? Any help would be appreciated.
