heater core hoses 700 90

help. I just completed the nightmare of replacing the heater core on my 90 wagon, and I think that I have re-attached the hoses wrong. Does the hose with the heater shut-off valve attach to the upper or lower core nipple? BTW: I have a cheap source ($90)for OEM brand new heater cores for this care if any of you want to avoid paying your dealer $300: www.discountautoparts.com
