Car stalls when reversing 700 1988

We have a 1988 760 Turbowagon that stalls after putting it into reverse but only after the throttle has been depressed and released (ie when backing up in a parking lot).I found that I could stall it by repeating this type of throttle action. Does anyone have any ideas of what might be causing this to happen? Thanks.
