Battery maintenance 900 1997

I've got a 940 model of January '97, therefore 4 years old next month.

Last week the car sounded like having its battery down.

Now, 4 year looks to me a little bit early to change battery.

On the other hand, they say that those batteries do not need to be topped up with water, in fact I have never done this.

But, is it indeed the case ?

If not, shall I use distilled or demineralized water ?
