power steering hard when turning left 700 1989

In the morning, my power steering is hard when I turn left. After a few goes it eases up and becomes much easier to turn. Right turn is fine.

Fluid has had a grey colour for some time (evidence of filings?) I have replaced it with valvoline synthetic (change the fluid every year and inserted a magnet on a string in the reservoir), to try to extend life and delay costly rebuilds etc.

Is my p/steering reaching the end of the road? Or is there someting else the problem?

What option available for me?

PS i replaced by halogans with new H4 units made by Narva which promise 30% greater light and no extra heat. I have noticed the improvement. Cost was Aus$ 22 for 2. Roughly $12 USD. E-mail me if you want details.
