fuel relay keeps overheating! 200 1986

I'm going to cry. My car is falling apart and I should have just taken it to the dealer. Now, I'm much too involved to yield to "the man." (Sorry, I know many of you are "the man" but you are the exceptions.) Anyway, I replaced the relay and she stopped stuttering and ran fine for about 5 minutes--maybe even less! When I arrived home I took the relay off and boy was it hot. So, I just purchesed both an inline fuel pump--which I question if my 86 240 even has--and an external pump. I'm getting ready to install both as I think my problem started because I drove my car too many times very close to empty while I was looking for a job. (I just moved to Silicon Valley.) Anyway, other than that, my baby has been well taken care of. It has been serviced to the max.

Any thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated.
