Gas Gauge 900 96

When I bought the car in February the gas gauge worked just fine. Now that it's winter time and when I fill the tank and drive for awhile (20 miles or so) the gauge goes to a half a tank and then further driving (100-200)it goes from 1/2 to empty and the warning light comes on. I don't smell or see any gas or leakage. Does this indicate a faulty float or measuring mechanism or a faulty dash gauge. Thanks in advance.
