Fuel Pump Noise 700 86

My 740 (170,000 miles)fuel pump is making a lot of noise. I pulled the fuse for the in tank pump and the noise went away after a few seconds. The fuel pressure regulator is not stuck (plenty of fuel is returning to the tank). Fuel filter has 55,000 miles on it. Car runs fine under all conditions.

Does noise mean the main pump is going to fail?

Anybody have any ideas?
