It's official: the whining noise in my 91 turbo wagon is not the center bearing (replaced it and got a slight reduction in noise), it's the rear itself. The mechanic went over the whole thing with a stethoscope and the remaining noise is in the differential, as the bearings are quiet. He changed the oil and added BG conditioner to it. But the noise is there. From what I can glean from the FAQ, I may have a problem with the pinion seal nut being too tight, a bad pinion bearing or perhaps a bad set of gears. The car has only 90,000 miles on it so trouble in the rear axle is about the last thing I would expect but the noise is there so that's what it is. What now? Is this easily fixable or do I replace the rear or ...?
Given that I have a 91 Turbo 940 wagon which rear end do I have: ALD or LSD and are there Dana part numbers that I could take to any rear axle specialist and have them fix it. What type of costs should I expect. This is unchartered territory for me. I must have put 300-400 thousand miles on several 122's, 240's and the like and I have never seen a rear go bad. Abe, Don, somebody HHHHHHHHHHHhelp! MAny thanks in advance for any advice.
