Hi Folks ... I'm very tempted to eliminate the EGR system on my 79 242. Last year i found the EGR tube behind the engine had rusted through... my remedy was to cut if off and crimp shut the part attached to the exhaust manifold, while disconnecting and plugging the vacuum line for the EGR valve. The stuff is easily accessible now because the transmission is currently out....and I'm tempted to take it all out and plug the holes in the manifolds. It seems I could eliminate a lot of spaghetti and a part called a "vacuum amplifier" [Which is an interesting concept in itself....]
Is this a good idea, or should I just shell out the bucks for a new EGR tube?? [I have no idea what shape the EGR valve is, since the tube was rusted out when I got the car.] This is supposed to be an extremely cheap car, and I do not intend to sell it [except to a junkyard when it's dead.] I could probably use some guidance, though, on exactly how to re-route the vacuum lines after the other stuff is gone.
Anyone been there??
Keith
