Getting compression checked 700 85

I would like to get my compression checked. Can you tell me what I would need to do to do it. Pull the spark plugs screw in the compression checker and crank it over? Is this right? If I take it to a mechanic and have them check it what should I tell him to look for or what should the readings be? How much +/-. Thanks. Mike
