rear axle seal leak 200 86

After having my brakes replaced on my '86 244DL at the local shop, the mechanic added a note to the "recommended services" part of the bill that the rear axle seal was leaking and needed to be replaced. After getting home, I looked and didn't see an obvious leak anywhere. Where is this seal located? And is replacing it a reasonable DIY project? thanks.
