Wiring Question: Maintain Wire Length? 200 ALL

The oil pressure sensor in my 240 is toast.The wiring is rotted - from neighboring oil I would guess - and detached from the sensor. My question: How important is it to maintain the original wire length (now unknown), assuming I'm using at least the original guage wire. How does this question apply to other wiring harness repairs? Thanks.
