I don't know what you guys are all arguing about, but sudden acceleration can happen in autos. We had a 1988 Sterling 825SL that rocketed out of our garage backward when my father was trying to back it up a few feet to gain access to our lawn mower in front of the car. When he put the car in reverse, the wheels started burning rubber and the car peeled out of the garage. The only way to stop it was to put the car in "park" and essentially destroy the transmission in the process. I saw the whole thing and it was horrifying considering that I was almost hit. This also has happened to other people with the same car. The problem was that part of the accelerator cable was catching on a pipe towards the back of the engine. The problem was rectified by shortening the cable and taking out the extra slack. That is factual proof that sudden acceleration can happen, although I don't know what the problem is with Volvos.
