Squeeking brakes 900 1993

My 1993, 960 with 90K miles recently started to squeek very loudly when almost coming to a full stop. This occurs when the brakes are warmed up. The pads are Volvos' and almost brand new with less than 10K miles on them. The FAQ suggests shims but these pads already have a padding on the back. Do I put the goop on and then another shim, try chamfering the edges or save time and energy and just go to Metalmasters with goop and shims? Suggestions appreciated. Thank you.
