Thanks to everyone who responded to my question last week...I'll do a brief recap...1986 245DL, automatic, 200,000+ miles (odometer not working)was starting intermittenly...would turn over just wouldn't start...then would start...NEVER ran rough once it got started and still doesn't...DOES NOT stall once it is running. My mechanic (not a Volvo specialist but a good mechanic and an honest guy) was baffled because once we got it over there it ran perfect and started perfect. He cleaned throttle body, replaced fuel filter, replace spark plugs, checked fuel pressure, it was fine once the new filter was in place, adjusted timing and idle to specs, oil change etc. I picked it up and it ran fine THEN I filled it up with gas and suddeny it wouldn't start again. This time there was no intermittent starting, it would turn over all day but wouldn't start. Then we shot carb cleaner into the throttle body and she fired right up. We drove her 20 minutes away to the mechanic again and it ran perfect the entire time. We haven't done a WHOLE lot to the car yet because I only want to spend as much money as I have too...maybe one of you has had this problem before. My mechanic is having a hard time diagnosing it and he is NOT an electrical guy....I told him I'd post here to see what you guys had to say because you are always soooo helpful and have saved me so much money in the past!!
So to recap...Car will not start unless we shoot carb cleaner into throttle body and once it starts it runs smooth as silk and does not stall...what should my first order of checking be? As a side note, I can hear the fuel pump relay clicking sometimes, sometimes not...if that means anything. Thanks again!!
